چکیده

A serial link transmitter fabricated in a large-scale integrated 0.4m CMOS process uses multilevel signaling (4PAM) and a three-tap pre-emphasis filter to reduce intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by channel low-pass effects. Due to the process-limited on-chip frequency, the transmitter output driver is designed as a 5 : 1 multiplexer to reduce the required clock frequency to one-fifth the symbol rate, or 1 GHz. At 5 Gsym/s (10 Gb/s), a data eye opening with a height >350 mV and a width >100 ps is achieved at the source. After 10 m of a copper coaxial cable (PE142LL), the eye opening is reduced to 200 mV and 90 ps with pre-emphasis, and to zero without filtering. The chip dissipates 1 W with a 3.3-V supply and occupies 1.5 2.0 mm2 of die area.

A Low-Power 8-PAM Serial Transceiver in 0.5- m Digital CMOS

An 8-PAM CMOS transceiver is described in this paper. Pre-emphasis is implemented without an increase in DAC resolution or digital computation. The receiver oversamples with three fully differential 3-bit ADCs. The prototype transmits at up to 1.3 Gb/s and has a measured bit error rate of less than 1 in 10 for an 810-Mb/s pseudorandom bit sequence transmission. The device, packaged in a 68-pin ...

A 5-8 Gb/s low-power transmitter with 2-tap pre-emphasis based on toggling serialization

We demonstrate a low-power wireline transmitter with 2-tap pre-emphasis in which serialization is achieved by toggling serializer with data transition information extracted from parallel input data. This novel technique of serialization provides significantly reduced power consumption since it does not need the short pulse generation block required in the conventional serializer. In addition, t...

A 0.8- m CMOS 2.5 Gb/s Oversampling Receiver and Transmitter for Serial Links

A receiver targeting OC-48 (2.488 Gb/s) serial data link has been designed and integrated in a 0.8m CMOS process. An experimental receiving front-end circuit demonstrates the viability of using multiple phased clocks to overcome the intrinsic gate-speed limitations in the demultiplexing (receiving) and multiplexing (transmitting) of serial data. To perform clock recovery, data is 3 oversampled ...

Reducing data dependent jitter utilising adaptive FIR pre-emphasis in 0.18 μm CMOS

Due to advances of technology in multimedia applications in recent years, the demand for high user end bandwidth point to point links has increased significantly. Jitter requirements have become ever more stringent with the increase in high speed serial link data rates. The introduced jitter severely degrades the performance of the high speed serial link. This paper introduces an adaptive FIR p...

Transmitter and Receiver Circuits for Serial Data Transmission over Lossy Copper Channels for 10 Gb/s in 0.13 μm CMOS

This paper presents a transmitter and receiver for high speed serial data links including pre-distortion and equalization circuits. The circuits allow data transmission over lossy copper channels up to 10 Gb/s and beyond. The transmitter uses a three tap FIR-filter for pre-distortion. A full rate FIR design allows a low latency and provides a smooth filter characteristic. An analog equalizer in...
